Who are we

Tendoryu AIKIDO The Hague was founded in 2001 by a group of impassioned aikidoka's. Since the founding the group has grown into a mixed society of people of all ages. Despite differences in duration, frequency or level of practicing all practitioners are determined to reach a higher level of aikido. This is achieved by learning from each other, and giving feedback to each other. The dojo is led by Erwin van der Beek who is a by Shimizu Sensei acknowledged teacher.

What we do

Tendoryu Aikido is not only a sport or martial art. It is also a way of life. It is a path that has to be followed with sincerity. To be sincere is difficult, for you have to overcome the limited self, your ego. In Tendoryu Aikido this is very important.

During training we do not only pay attention to the technical aspects of the techniques, but also to the moral values of budo (the way of the warrior). The simplicity of the lessons gives the opportunity for everyone, with or without experience in practicing martial arts, to attend.
In the beginning the etiquette and techniques can seem difficult, but with the good guidance they can be absorbed quite easily.

Because there is no element of competition in Tendoryu Aikido one tends to practice only to perfect techniques. However, attitude and behavior are equally important. That is why attention is paid to the correct attitude, as well as the perfection of the techniques.
Attention to moral values is found to be very important in Tendoryu Aikido. Next to the usual REI (manners), like friendliness and courteousness, politeness and greeting, this nurtures a better understanding and support of the techniques of Tendoryu Aikido.

The combination of technique and self-control forms a unique martial art. With the right manners conflicts can be avoided; non violence is better than forced victory, but if we close our eyes fearfully when faced with injustice, the unreasonable will remain and the reasonable may be lost. We will be obliged to inhabit an outrageous world where the weak are always victims of the strong.

By practicing Tendoryu Aikido you will build up self-confidence and courage, improving your view of life. You will be more sensitive to a threatening atmosphere or other signals along with more flexible body movements that will give you the opportunity to react quickly and in the proper way.

The Sensei

Erwin van der Beek (1-7-1971 in The Hague)
3e Dan Tendoryu Aikido.

As long as I can remember I have been interested in budo (the way of the warrior). After practicing several martial arts, Tendoryu Aikido of Shimizu Sensei caught my attention.

I encountered Aikido for the first time when I was on Aruba in 1995, being  stationed there as a marine. Back in The Hague I found a dojo practicing Tendoryu Aikido and came in contact with the founder of this Aikido style, Shimizu Sensei.
To be able to practice Aikido more I left the marines and started working for the The Hague fire department. The work-schedule as a fire fighter gave me the opportunity to practice Aikido more often.
My contact with Shimizu Sensei grew stronger and in 2001 I started my own Tendoryu Aikido dojo: The Tendoryu Aikido The Hague dojo. This is directly under the guidance of Shimizu Sensei himself. To me he is the master of Aikido who can show me the non visual aspects of Aikido. The same way the founder of Aikido, Ueshiba O-sensei, did to Shimizu Sensei. Ai-Ki-Do. To me Do is the path you walk with mind and body. But the attainment of the Way is in the process. It is doing a thing not for the sake of doing it; it is doing a thing because it releases  me from a certain constraints of the limited self (ego) self-centeredness, preoccupation with fears and doubts that diminish us in the daily life. The Way draws us into the domain of the potential self: self-realization, self-cultivation, and self-perfection.

Beside Erwin, also Maarten van Dieten (2nd dan), Randy Hollander, Mart Ottenheim en Elsje Paap (all 1st dan) teach Tendo Ryu aikido in the dojo in Den Haag.
